I am the type of person who loves to watch movies that I love, over and over. Actually, I don’t really watch them more than twice… I just play them. I play them while I clean, while I sweep, vacuum (yes, I vacuum!) dust, fold laundry (a rare occurrence now thanks to The Laundry Lady!) and in general chase behind my children, attempting to straighten my shabby but chic – if I do say so myself – little house.
Because I am of an artsy sort of temperament – all senses alert at all times – I can’t just watch any movie any day. Movies go with Seasons to me. Some these season/film combos have come to be joined because of the season that I actually watched the movie in i.e – Under the Tuscan Sun falls in the Indian Summer category because I went to see it on my birthday. Some of the combinations are a result of the season portrayed in the movie itself; Love Actually = Winter/Christmas. You’ve Got Mail can go Fall (bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils) or Spring (daises are the friendliest flower) depending on my mood.
This summer, at least so far, the movie that is on constant repeat in the DVD player is is Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. All the women glistening in the southern Louisiana heat, the lake cabin, summer dances, and sunflowers make this a summertime movie to me. I am in the middle of a lake-house project for work and my mind keeps going back to the Ya-Ya houses -the big southern homes, the time worn cabin,- the rich sunset drenched colors and how history danced all around the characters, playing tricks on their eyes and their memories.
So my question is – does anyone else associate certain movies with certain seasons? Or is this one of my stranger quirks… I anxiously await your comments!
I love “How to Make an American Quilt” in the summer… it has much the same feel as “Ya-ya” (and some of the same actresses)>>…and I always have to listen to Everclear’s “So Much for the Afterglow” album at Christmastime (does that count?)
Encino Man/Armistice Day
Nathan — you’re funny!>>J-roo, Sleepless in Seattle — Harses,Harses,Harses,Harses — definitely a Christmas movie. However, I’m inclined to say this is a weird quirk. I’ve never woken up and thought “summer, I Think I’ll watch Shag” (not the Austin Powers thing).>>XOXO
“the notebook” is very summer to me…>and of course “meet me in st. louie” is a christmas time movie even though it’s got all four seasons….I know there is anothother but I just can’t remember what.
breakfast at tiffany’s for those days that just dont make since>>oh and shag definately thanks janna. umm thats the i wish i’d had more good times with my girls….and picking up strange boys.
Wow, we are still bosom friends. I am exactly the same way, down to loving You’ve got Mail in the fall or spring, depending on my mood. Sleepless in Seattle ~ always winter. When Harry Met Sally, generally a fall movie, or just being nostalgic for crisp, fall days. Oooh, just read Janna’s quote ~ too funny!
