We went to my grandparents house for the long holiday weekend.
It was wonderful and fabulous and perfect but of course exhausting at times because that is how being with family is. Everyone had to take a turn “hiding out” somewhere in order to regain sanity, but overall it was absolutely marvelous.
My mother came and stayed the whole time ( I never get to see her enough,) my sister Judea was with us and my dad and brother were able to join us on Monday for our grand ole all-American meal.
The only people missing were my sister Jemimah and her husband Adam who just moved to Arizona, and my Auntie Tei’s family (but they never get to come on the 4th anyhow.)
The weather was blistering hot most of the weekend so we had an indoor picnic. Of course it rained and thundered and completely cooled off right before our meal, so I guess we could have eaten on the screened porch, but by then the table was set so we continued as planned…
Table decorations were thrown together from scraps from book projects
(yes, not even a holiday weekend can escape book-projects at this stage….)
while we watched John Adams help get American rolling…
Weekends like this make me so grateful. Grateful for family. Grateful that my kids are getting to know my grandparents and will be able to remember them forever. Grateful for food on the table and a roof over our heads, especially during a thunderstorm. Grateful for ideas and imaginations and board games and great books and chocolate cake. And freedom. I am so very grateful for the freedom we have to to enjoy our life, our liberty and our pursuits of happiness, whatever they may be.
What a beautiful table, so glad you had a lovely family time. x
