This is the door that started it all. Well sort of.
I have a door almost exactly like this one – only the window is center instead of off center – that my neighbor gave to me when they got a new door. Why they would want any other door than this beautiful one is beyond me, but I am not going to argue, because now it is mine!
It is going to be our new front door – once I decide what color to paint it.
This beautiful blue door that you see here actually belongs to the talented Fifi –
so I cannot claim it.
But what colors to paint the door and the shutters?
The same colors? Contrasting colors? Bright & wild? Muted and safe?
Currently we have very old and faded green (almost gray) shutters and a red door.
I think I am done with red doors for now. It has been almost 6 years after all, and with the new door not yet installed this is the perfect time to pick a new color scheme.
So I decided to go to Valspar.com and have a little fun trying out some color ideas.
This cape cod style is pretty close to my house. My house is longer due to an addition on one end, but it is white, has a chimney, has the same basic roof line and dormers. I went ahead and created one to look as close to our existing colors as possible. The colors are a little off, but you get the general idea. Frankly, I could have done a better job matching the shutter color, but I got tired of fiddling with it and quickly moved on to the fun part – NEW colors!
Here are 4 options I created today –
Option #1
Apple Green door and stoop, Cherry Red shutters, Pale Creamy Yellow Trim
Light Apple Green Trim, Aqua Door and Stoop, Cheery Red Shutters
Option #4
Aqua Door and Stoop, Apple Green Shutters, White Trim
So, what do you think?
Do any of these combo’s strike your fancy?
Would drive by my house and think I was that “what crazy lady chose those wacky colors? ” if I went with option #2?
Jerusalem, I LOVE the last choice. But pick your fave, and don't worry about the neighbors!
When I was young, we lived in a ranch-style house with two-tone siding: the top two thirds was white, the bottom third dark brown. The trim was all white. My mom got brave and painted the front door a warm persimmon ORANGE! She also painted some wood planters to match and filled them with orange marigolds.
It was STUNNING – and the neighbors all thought our house was incredible. I have never forgotten that, and just yesterday, when I was painting a store's front & back doors orange, I remembered again how brave my mom was and what an impact it made on me at age 11!
I like the 3 trim colors of option 2, but not the red-type color. Is there another that would go well with the aqua and green? I love picking colors but it is scary when your canvas is “as big as a house”.
What a great way to play with color! These are so much fun…#4 is awesome.
My favorite was option two. And I am not in AR yet. Hope to be in a couple of weeks, and hoping I can drop in on you.
I have to go with option 1 or 2. The more color the better, IMO!
How exciting!

I like the blue doors the best…they pop out to the eye where as the green ones blend into the grass. I like the centered door being the focal point. Cannot wait to see the finished look!
I also love your upstairs windows…how fun at Christmas to hang wreaths from the windows…or I guess any time of year. I would go crazy changing them every season! 🙂
I am digging number three personally. I dont think I like it when the sofits (how do you spell that?) are painted a different color.
Option #1- love it!

I pick option three or four. Just go for it, paint is very forgiving because you’re able to paint over it if you don’t like it.
I love option #4! Would it be too weird to do option 4 but then do the garage doors in the same aqua as the house door instead of green? I love that color!
By the way, Happy Mother’s Day today!
I think option #2 looks exactly like you! My hubby just repainted our front porch, door and shutters…the porch, shutters and front door were green and the porch rails were cranberry red! Now it’s black and gray, but I loved my red and green. Go with what you like!
I came across your blog, well I’m not sure how cause It’s late and now I’m tired, but I LOVE it! And your name, soooo cool! I will be back again and again. People will find your link listed in my fav’s! Ok, now I’m off to bed!
I vote for #2!! The aqua door is more inviting than the apple green door and #’s 3 and 4 are too safe.
I just adore your blog! We have many similar ideas and tastes. You often post a photo of a room or furniture that I have torn out of a magazine. We also have had some of the same church experiences. I really appreciate your honesty about your hurts concerning church. Thanks, Cindy @ Happy Endings
Well, I’m loving the aqua color we painted our door a few weeks ago… so I have to vote for that! 🙂
Yes, people would think you are a crazy lady if you went with #2. But, it’s your house and if it makes your heart sing. Well then. My favorite, however, is #4.
Oddly enough, my fave option was #2. Yes, it's a little funky, but that's you ~ you've always been, & always will be, a little funky. 🙂

I have to be honest I think it works if you live in Key West but if not I would just pick a couple of your favorite elements. I think I like 3 or 4 but keep the stoop and the garage white. I would suggest moving the two middle plants and and adding white window boxes below. I think pretty flowers would add a ton of color with out scaring the neighors:)
